The Orlesian occupation of Ferelden lasted almost a century, marking a dark period in Thedas.
Vigil's Keep was the first fortress to fall. Twenty years after the invasion began there, Orlais finally sacked the city of Denerim, claiming victory and drove the king into hiding. Though routed, the king now known as "Brandel the Defeated" continued to rebel against the Orlesians... but his efforts have proven inefficient, as most nobles believe that Ferelden is truly lost.
August has just ended and the cold and rain are starting to show, on-and-off, in the southern parts of the continent. The northern half is experiencing only minor changes.

NOV. 24th Happy belated first month anniversary to us! A few things to be noted. We are currently taking nominations for our first ever site spotlights. The nomination period will be over by the 30th, so feel free to take your time as new members and threads roll in. Just don't forget about them. Secondly, the advertising contest is still going strong, but it slated to wrap up at the end of the month. If you want to earn some extra gold and help promote the site, best to get on that now, while the rewards are higher than usual. Thirdly, the site lottery is still going, and the drawing period will be over Friday. Lastly, we should be getting that multiplayer thread soon. Sorry it's been delayed so long--as you can imagine, I've been busy with single player for Inquisition. Once I'm done, I'll put up the threads and we can hopefully get some games going.
OCT. 19th We're kicking off the site's grand opening with quite a few things to do (besides apply and join, of course ;D). We have an advertising contest going on right now, which will earn new members a ton of gold. You even get ten gold just for advertising for us once. Aside from that, our first ever site lottery is underway, with double the traditional jackpot payout. There might even be a few other things that we've forgotten to mention, but we're sure you can figure those out on your own. ;D As a final note, with DAI's release date being less than a month out (in North America), we're strongly considering organizing multiplayer across the various platforms so IWV members can play together. If that sounds like something that might interest you, keep your eyes peeled for the next little while.
All characters, pending and accepted, are within this area. The templates for applications are here, and this is where you should post your characters to be reviewed. Do not post them in the individual race sections.
Just about anything that requires direct input such as voting or filling out a form - activity checks, finished threads, open threads, who's who, contests, event sign ups - as well as anything temporary of a similar nature.
Plotting threads, thread trackers, timeline tracking, personal correspondence - any interpersonal bits regarding your characters not directly related to roleplay or wanted ads.
The glittering capital of Orlais, and center of the Andrastian Chantry. Unlike other cities, where the people are the life-blood and the character, Val Royeaux is her own person, and her people little more than decorations. Filled with many attractions, from the massive marketplace of Belle Marché to Grande Royeaux Theater, the wealthy side of the city is always shown as thriving. But, anyone who lives there also knows there's a steep divide, and when one does manage to find one of the well-hidden, less fortunate sections of the city, it becomes quite obvious.
While more appearing more utilitarian than one would expect from an Orlesian city, Montsimmard lives up to being perhaps the second most important city in the country. Being home to the primary Grey Warden stronghold in Orlais, as well as a mage circle on par with the size of the White Spire (and thus a templar presence to compensate it), the city is seen more as military-orientated than Val Royeaux. Despite that. most her residents are just ostentatious as any other Orlesian.
Bordered by the Arbor Wilds on the southern end, the Frostback Mountains to the east, and the Waking Sea to the north, the Dales is the former homeland of the elves, granted to them after their help in the defeat of Tevinter. However, it was not to be, the land reclaimed with an Exalted March ordered by Orlais in the Glory Age. It has since been a part of Orlais, but much of the land is still occupied by elves.
A nation where class and social politics frequently rule the day. The opulent lives of the nobility may give the impression that life is easy and prosperous for all, but the lives of commoners are often challenging, while all aspire to the lives of the noble class. Many Orlesians are hardly well-to-do and work as freeholders, or else laborers on another's property, often leading to general discontent and simmering resentment.
The former capital of Ferelden, though often hard to tell the 'former' part, at times – and very few Fereldans acknowledge the change. Home of both nobility and the common people, this sprawling city has much to offer the adventurer, with its market place, magic shops, armorers and bordellos. However, one cannot let one's eye rest on a single place for too long, lest a back alley brawler or thief cut one's purse strings, or one's throat.
The waters of Lake Calenhad are steeped in legends. From the Avvars, who believed it was the former site of the mountain which stood at the center of the world, to the Tevinters, who believed that the waters of Lake Calenhad were blessed by Razikale and that those who drank from them were granted special insights, and to the Fereldens themselves with the legend of King Calenhad Theirin, which gives the place its name.
There have been many wars and battles in the Brecilian Forest, many of which were between the elves and Tevinter mages. The existence of the elves in the forest goes far in time, even before the time of Arlathan. The death of so many supposedly tore the Veil, which separates the Fade and the real world. Its sinister air, and possessed flora, have led to many rumors and stories behind the ancient woods.
Ferelden is a relatively temperate nation, historically populated by a simple militaristic culture that has only begun to "civilize" in the last few centuries. Cities are considered virtually anarchic by the standards of most outsiders, and much of the land as a whole is considered untamed and savage – and what with the Avvar barbarians in foothills of the Frostbacks, and the Chasind in the Kocari Wilds, those assumptions are only half wrong, at best.
Any and all other locations within the borders of Thedas, which includes the Free Marches, Antiva, Nevarra, Rivain, the Tevinter Imperium, the Anderfels, Seheron, Par Vollen, as well as the bodies of water that surround them.
It's all pretty generic: No advertising other sites. No spamming. Don't heavily discuss or link to other RP sites. Don't bring in drama. Don't pester people. Don't impersonate other members. And, do not mention any Chantry board updates.
